The Brazilians call it Jarina or Marfim, and other places know it as Tagua. The nut of the Tagua Palm (Phytelephas macrocarpa) is gelatinous and little by little hardens. When dried it is exceptionally hard for a vegetable material (2.5 on Mohs scale). It has similar properties of animal ivory and can be carved. It is used for jewelry, marquetry, and finishes for luxury products (knives, pens, etc.), musical instruments and figurine carving.
